Are henna tattoos safe?

One of the questions we get asked a lot by many of our clients is whether henna tattoos are safe. The safety of these tattoos is completely dependent on the products used in making the henna paste. Our henna tattoo artists use natural ingredients such as crushed henna leaves, oil, lemon juice, and sugar to make henna. We don’t use any chemicals that could be harmful to your skin and that’s why we guarantee our clients’ safety. We often use natural henna powder, which is green in colour, made from all-natural ingredients and free from harmful chemicals.

Does a henna tattoo hurt?

Henna tattoos don’t hurt at all. It’s temporary tattooing that’s done using a tube with a very thin opening. The process doesn’t involve the use of a needle and takes about 15 minutes or so to complete depending on the design you choose. The henna stains the skin leaving a dark reddish-brown colour that can stay on the skin for weeks.

What to expect when getting a henna tattoo

Once we paint the design on you, it normally takes about 15 minutes to dry. Some designs may take a little longer so you’ll have to be patient and if you notice a thin layer of cracks forming on the skin, know that it’s just about to dry completely. Allow the henna paste to set, which usually takes about 6 hours. The longer you allow the cracked layer of henna to remain in the skin in those first hours, the darker and longer the stain will be. As soon as you wash it off the next morning, it will leave a beautiful imprint of the design on your skin. The colour may appear orange at first but it will soon turn into a beautiful dark brown colour.

How to make the henna tattoo last

The henna tattoo will typically last for a week or two, even longer if you follow the aftercare instructions. It also depends on the spot where the tattoo has been applied and a person’s body temperature level. If the tattoo is applied on a dry spot, the stain tends to last longer. If the tattoo is placed on a spot that’s often washed like on the hands, it doesn’t last as long.

Our henna artists would recommend allowing the paste to stay on the skin for at least 15 minutes so that it dries completely. When dry, the flakes should come off easily but any paste should still be left on the design and allowed to set. Henna paste will naturally crack, flake and fall off the design leaving the tattoo on your skin. However, the earlier you remove the paste, the lighter the tattoo will be. We recommend leaving the paste for as long as you can to get that dark and long-lasting appearance.
